The Patient

December 3, 2009

As is such around this house, nothing goes off without a few bumps in the road. We like to keep it interesting.

All appears okay now, but we are all looking for a bit more sleep and will keep an eye on the little one.

Asia did fine in her surgery yesterday, and came home early in the afternoon. She slept away the day in a half lost state, perfect.

Late evening she ate dinner, was up and talking, looking good. I was sent home with some pain meds that would also help keep her calm, so after dinner she had her first dose as instructed, especially since I did not want her getting anymore active then she already was.

This is where the fun started.

She had the more rare reaction to the medications by going the complete opposite of calm and sedated. She was hyper, restless, a bit paranoid, and overall, quite the handful. She wanted to tackle the other cats (more then usual), zoom around, and of course, when she noticed her incision, it was with amplified exuberance that she went after it. This was a completely drug induced state, she was out of her mind, poor Asia was being very dangerous to herself post surgical or not.

I attempted a soft Ecollar on her (cone head), and later a large sock around her waist to try and protect the area. But when you have a medicated, paranoid, far beyond hyper cat, the reaction was not good. We tried a crate, a dark bathroom, but all created an insane desire to escape. She is a high energy cat, but this was a WHOLE new level.

So I stayed with her in a dark room, watching her all night to keep her from destroying her incision or getting into too much trouble. She calmed down a bit, but would not sleep. She finally dozed off fitfully in the wee morning hours. Poor girl.

Late this morning she returned to her normal state. No more pain medication for her!!

I chatted with the doctor, we may try something else if she needs it, but so far we are going no meds. She has damaged her incision a bit, but not enough to warrant intervention.

My little drama queen!

She tried to be active today, which I have tried to curb (ha).

I also tried the Ecollar again, lets all just laugh one more time. This made her want to run and play like this was a new game…escape the contraption!!

So hopefully the next couple days stay fairly peaceful and she naps and sleeps as she should!

I am currently employing the best feline sedative I know……Fireplace!!

Thanks for all the well wishes!

Sounds like Maggie May after her knee surgery and spay. The pain meds made her crazy! We had to do the ecollar and sock around the waist. She still managed to remove most of her spay and knee sutures.
Saylor, on the other hand, was so sedate I laid next to her all night just to make sure she was breathing.

Sending Asia lots of healing vibes!

Sounds worrying, but we’re glad that Asia is fine and well now!
