Trash Man

February 1, 2010

Bayou, being the ever industrious bengal that he is, has always had an issue with the kitchen trash. The funny thing is, he rarely if ever found anything he actually wanted in there. I believe it was more the challenge of getting into something just out of reach.

We are now on our fourth version of trash cans, and actually the latest trash can
has lasted us a couple years believe it or not. I won’t call it 100% Bayou proof, but it is as close as it gets. The first was plastic, and that was NO match whatsoever. The next two were of metal versions with flip tops, and he always figured out how to either A) flip the top, or B) pull the trash bag liner so that the trash came to the top, then he flipped the top. Crafty lil’ bugger.

I shopped around for ages, people probably thought I was a bit odd when I was testing various aspects of trash cans on display, such as checking to see if I could get a nail in between a seam to open a top, making sure none of the liner was exposed, and so on. The motion sensitive ones just made me laugh out loud as I imagined Bayou waiving his paw over the sensor, saying to himself ‘wow, this is kind of handy’.

Since he has not gained access to the trash in years, he barely pays attention to it anymore (or so you think….if the lid delays in shutting, he races over and sticks his head in promptly). I had pulled the trash can to the counter to prep something, and he saw the propped open lid and it renewed his interest yet again.

As soon as I had closed the lid and walked out of the kitchen, he was at it again. With the can away from the wall, it provided new angles to try that he could not before.

Maybe he could go through the handle in the back?

See that claw there…..it is actually about a quarter of an inch from catching the lid and allowing him to flip it up……hrmmmmm. Hence why we keep it up against the wall, and away from counters.

This is why he has never been able to gain access. The lid is flush with the edge, so he cannot flip it from the sides. Sitting on it is the only way he can gain an angle with his claws, but that in turn only keeps it shut.

Asia has never been in the trash can, but maybe she can help?

….. or not

Since he could not get into the trash, he decided to use it like a training stool and try to get some chicken.

“Look mum, my seal impression!”

“Here Ye Here Ye…….”

“…Gimme sum Chickenz!”

“Rawr!”

“Please???”

“fine….be that way!”

(that’s his grumpy look…but we all know Bayou is never grumpy, he cannot pull it off, he is too much of a love bug)

He got chickenz :) …..bulyt as usual, after 3 or 4 bits, he did not want it anymore. He kept doing tricks, but he is a picky boy when it comes to treats. Sometimes we work for ‘pets & scritches’ instead, he loves those more then chicken actual!
